About Vinay
Prana Vashya Yoga was developed by renowned yoga champion Vinay Kumar of Mysore. Vinay began practicing Hatha yoga at the age of seven and soon moved into Ashtanga practice. After a few years, he started entering and taking top awards in numerous yoga competitions in Mysore, Karnataka state, and finally winning All-India and Champion of Champions competitions many times over
During this time he began to push the envelope and experiment with different applications and after a few years Vinay discovered that he had actually developed a dynamic new form of yoga he was later to call Prana Vashya Yoga. This was all before he was even twenty years old!
He completed Graduation in the field of psychology with the goal of bringing about a new approach towards the behavior of an individual, in his teaching which could help bringing a positive change in the practitioner's lifestyle.
He is well known for his unique teaching-approach to each student individually depending upon his/her capabilities.
In addition to the Prana Vashya Yogasana series and Pranayama, Vinay has developed a unique and powerful approach to
(1) Spine enhancement and flexibility. These techniques are a unique and highly specialized package of therapeutic exercises which provide a safe yet dynamic development in flexibility and back bending. The practitioner learns to perform advanced and demanding postures with increased flexibility.
(2) Muscle strengthening and development. These techniques serve as the procedures to strengthen and develop the core muscles of the body and thereby ensuring consistency in the structure and the positions accomplished. The increased proprioception experienced during the practice of these technique will help the practitioner to increase his capacity to focus and learn to perform the balancing postures with ease.
Vinay's practice techniques are also used as therapies for those who suffer from joint instability and muscle injuries.
Though Vinay is young, he is definitely and "old soul" with an endearing personality. Despite his youth, Vinay has a depth of understanding, maturity, and wisdom that belies.
Interview
What is Prana Vashya Yoga and how did you develop it?
"As the breath is such an essential part of yoga asana, for a long time I focused in depth on its relationship to performing the asana and discovered that the asana actually follows the breath and not the other way around if done properly with full awareness. Prana Vashya Yoga follows the breath instead of following the movement and maintains the rhythm of the breath throughout the practice. Through breath control, Prana Vashya Yoga keeps the attention fixed on the asana, not allowing the attention to wander."
So Prana Vashya Yoga is really more pranayama practice....
"Not as pranayama is generally understood. Pranayama is often a separate yoga practice whereas traditionally it was always a part of it. Prana Vashya Yoga fully integrates the two, in great part, with the application of kumbhakas (breath locks) so that one also experiences the effect of pranayama during the asana practice. There are actually sixty asanas in the sequence."
Can you talk a bit more about kumbhakas?
"A significant development of potential is experienced during the practice of kumbhakas. The use of kumbhakas helps quiet the mind and keeps the awareness on the breath/asana. The body experiences a better development in its resistance power and this helps to impart the complete effect of the asana practice without fatigue. Concentration on the bandhas isn't necessary when consciousness is on the simultaneous action of the breath and movements."
How does it compare to Ashtanga, Hatha, Iyengar, etc? Is PVY adaptable to other styles?
"The vinyasa is different, but most of the asanas are essentially the same; there are just more of them. Prana Vashya vinyasa provides a true equilibrium for the upper and lower body as there is a complete utilization of the shoulders, hip joints, thigh muscles, calf muscles, and hamstrings which help build and maintain strength and stamina in the legs as well.
Prana Vashya is distinguished by its unique approach to flow and balance. The flow is slow, deliberate, and deep, and the body is trained evenly along its front, back and transverse lines. This approach equally trains the body in strength, balance and flexibility while calming the mind and nervous system.
As I mentioned, Prana Vashya Yoga asanas are essentially the same as Hatha and Iyengar, but with an intensified application of each asana, and the attention and utilization of the breath and kumbhakas (breath locks). It is not difficult to learn the basic vinyasa, though becoming adept as it requires increased stamina, balance and flexibility. There is a different dynamic to the Prana Vashya Yoga breath/asana relationship. It takes 1-2 weeks to really start to experience this dynamic and it is quite profound. Prana Vashya Yoga can be considered as an enhancement to an existing practice, not as a conflict."
It sounds as if Prana Vashya Yoga is primarily for advanced practitioners.
"Not at all. In the same class I have had middle aged beginners with back injuries along side of advanced yoga teachers and students from all different yoga styles. Having said that, I have had several advanced second and third level students who were very surprised at the workout they received with Prana Vashya Yoga."
You are well known for your back bending and flexibility. Can you talk about that?
"Safe, deep back bending involves the opening of the pelvis, hip flexors, upper back and shoulders. Releasing these areas of tension allows the spine to extend into an even back bend where otherwise the lower back will take too much of the back bending action (often referred to as "crunching" the lower spine) which can result in pain and possibly injury. Prana Vashya exercises are designed to open and prepare the body in these areas, freeing tension in the body allowing the practitioner to experience a safe and progressive development into deeper back bending. The goal is not only strength and flexibility, but importantly, for a safe practice for health and longevity."
How are your classes conducted?
"Class sizes are limited to just thirteen. I offer what I like to call the 'New Mysore Style'; everyone goes at their own pace with the appropriate sequence and posture for their skill level, but close, individual attention is given to each student. Classes are two hours in length."
Please don't take this the wrong way, but you have won many awards and competitions, but some people in the West think that yoga competitions are "un-yoga like"...that yoga isn't about being competitive...
"I completely agree and in that sense it shouldn't be. Young people like to compete don't they? I competed from 9-21 years of age, but no longer do so. Winning awards and competitions also can provide credibility for a teacher as far as that goes. There is no teaching certification in India as such and we don't have promotion, advertising, and marketing as in the West, so yoga competitions are a good way of gaining recognition and establishing oneself. I think it is really not different from martial arts competition in that sense. There is a great spiritual aspect to martial arts, but competitions and demonstrations are for the physical part of it and is how professionals get established."
Good point. I hadn't thought of it that way.
2.课程介绍
Primary series
Prana Vashya Primary Series
Prana Vashya primary series is a sequence which includes 60 asana and is performed in a flow manner utilizing Prana Vashya Vinyasa krama in between specific asanas to ensure continuity and attention in the breath of the practitioner.
A practitioner at any level can take up this course. A practitioner who is flexible and has the capacity to accomplish all the postures shall work upon making his alignment, mobility & breath stronger, where as a beginner who has less awareness over the physical body and finds it hard to perform the postures shall be provided with variation of alignments which help them to develop flexibility and physical awareness or control in a short period of time.
To ensure progression in the practitioners’ sadhana, the Prana Vashya secondary series shall be introduced to the pupil who performs primary series with good breath control and asana accomplishment.
Acharya Vinay ji is not against any system of practice. He admires the intelligence behind the different approach towards asana practice. He believes that it is not the system but the response and stimuli rate between the student and the teacher is what brings progress in the practitioner.
Back Bending, Flexibility & Strengthening Course
This is the course which is on the highest demand in Mysore.
Practitioners who are practicing under the guidance of various teachers and various system are brought together under one roof for the practice with Acharya Vinay Kumar in his famous back bending class.
Spine enhancement and flexibility:- A unique and highly specialized package of therapeutic exercises which provide a safe yet dynamic development in flexibility and back bending. The practitioner learns to perform advanced and demanding postures with increased flexibility and ease.
The back bending and flexibility development course has no sequence of asanas. The practice focuses on each student individually. The practitioners will be given sequences of asanas depending upon their physical requirements which help to reduce rigidity in the muscles and increase their flexibility. This is not a flow practice. The practitioner will be allowed to relax in between every posture and feel the effect. Several advanced postures will be broken down to suit the practitioner's needs and thereby by increasing his performance as a whole. Vinay's techniques followed in this approach are well known to be stress busters and also help in increasing oxygen to the body.
Muscle strengthening and development:- These techniques serve as the procedures to strengthen and develop the core muscles of the body and thereby ensuring consistency in the structure and the positions accomplished. The increased proprioception experienced during the practice of this technique will help the practitioner to increase his capacity to focus and train him to perform the balancing postures with ease. This is also used as therapies for those who suffer from joint instability and muscle injuries.
Pranayama
The Shala works with a goal of changing all aasana practitioners into yoga practitioners by motivating them to continue Pranayama practice in their regular routine along with Yogasana practice.
Every individual sets into the journey of yoga observing asana to be the main part of it. While practicing asana, his assumption about his existence only in the physical body will make him materialize the benefit of the practice confining his awareness and development to the physical status only. If his intention is to learn yoga in its abstract, true form he will have to forego his awareness limit from the body and expand it to the vastness of mind. Pranayama is an approach which helps the practitioner experience of his existence beyond the physical limits. Where he learns to develop control over the various patterns of mind and their tendencies.
The Pranayama course at pranavashya yogashala intends to provide a strong foundation and awareness related to the importance and practical application of breathing technique (increasing or extending the level of pranic energy) in the path of yoga.
The Pranayama course at the Shala starts with an introduction to the basic foundation of Pranayama and the intensity (basic non retention or retention Pranayama) of the practitioner is decided.
Acharya Vinay Kumar has been practicing Pranayama since 21 years. He is one among the sought after teacher for Pranayama practice. It is found that practitioners who tend to practice twice a day or whose physical engagement in their regular life is high find it easy to cope with the physical exhaustion or energy demand very easily maintaining Pranayama practice.
Teacher Training programme: The Prana Vashya TTc is an 8 week’s course designed to help the practitioner to understand the intelligence behind the approach of Prana Vashya Yogasana series and the focus is to help them to explore and realize their best potential. Please Note
*For those who are beginners and would like to have a foundation for their personal practice will have to practice with us for a minimum of eight weeks time.
It is not surprising if the practitioner experiences soreness in the muscles or an increase in the level of the physical temperature or a little stomach upset which may happen by the end of the second week or the in the third week of your practice with us. These are the primary indicators of the physiological changes that takes place in the body (especially if you are new to the practice). At this condition, it is very important to practice in a way that helps these positive changes to take place easily. We expect the practitioner to be present in the class in such situations and inform the teacher before the class begins. Apart from all these experiences, the internal feeling will assure the practitioner that there is a lot of difference between a Positive and a negative change. Prevention is always better than cure.
The Shala will remain closed on all Sundays, moon days, and national holidays.
